1.3 Biographical notes 

Alessandro Ronconi (1909-1982) was born in Florence, and after attending Liceo Classico and a brief period at the Facoltà di Legge, he switch to Facoltà di Lettere in Florence. Here he got to know, among others, with Giorgio Pasquali and Giacomo Devoto. He became an high school teacher after graduation in Florence, Pisa, and Perugia. In 1938, he started teaching Latin language and literature at Facoltà di Magistero of the University of Urbino. Later o he started teaching Roman history and Latin grammar, becoming dean of the Faculty. He developed a relationship of great esteem and friendship with Carlo Bo, that recognized him as one of the professors contributed to the promotion of classical studies in Urbino. For this he was awarded an honorary degree from Carlo Bo in June 1979. For the occasion Ronconi prepared a lecture by the title “Cicerone e l’arcaismo del II sec. d.C.”. In 1948, he was given the chair of Latin literature in Facoltà di Lettere in Bari; then in 1951 he became professor of Latin language and literature in Florence; two years later, he started teaching also Greek and Latin grammar at the University of Pisa. In 1956, he directed Studi italiani di filologia classica, a really prestigious journal. From 1972 on, he was president of Associazione italiana di cultura classica.

1.4 Date and methods of acquisition

The Alessandro Ronconi collection was donated to Istituto di filologia classica of the University of Urbino as stated in his will in the early 1980s.

1.5 Collection history

The collection was, for a long time, located at Biblioteca Umanistica in via Saffi 2, in a room named after Ronconi himself; than in 2019, it was moved to Biblioteca San Girolamo.

The collection was given to the University without any kind of documentation.
