He was known as "son and student of the peasant civilization" of Montefeltro. He obtained a degree in pedagogy in 1946 and got his teaching qualification in history and philosophy for high schools in 1956.
He studied philosophy first with Gustavo Bontadini and later with Arturo Massolo, then served as a volunteer assistant and lecturer of History of Philosophy at the University of Urbino from 1947 to 1963.
After 1963, he taught History of Philosophy in Switzerland at the Rosenberg Institute in St. Gallen. In 1971, he obtained the title of Associate Professor in Theoretical Philosophy while holding a position as a lecturer in Philosophy of Science at the same time.
During the academic year 1981/82, he became Full Professor of Modern and Contemporary History of Philosophy at the Faculty of Education at the University of Urbino.
Enrico Garulli was also the president of the Urbino section of the Italian Philosophical Society, a member of the Accademia Raffaello of Urbino, and in 1975, he joined the Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts of Ancona as a corresponding member, becoming a full member in 1978.
Professor Garulli arrived late in the academic world and only gradually gained academic recognition, as noted by Xavier Tilliette.
